About the Center
More than six decades of building thoughtful, active citizens to advance democracy
At the Center for Civic Education, our mission is to promote an enlightened and responsible citizenry committed to democratic principles and actively engaged in the practice of democracy.
Today, many Americans look at our society and our political systems and see only division and dysfunction. The Center’s comprehensive approach to civic education provides a strong answer to this challenge, grounded in the principles, practice, and hope every citizen needs.

What we believe
-
Democracy depends on civic education.
Democracy is not self-sustaining; each generation must learn its principles, practice its skills, and renew its promise.
-
Civic learning must be focused and practiced.
The Center’s civic learning system is time-tested, research-backed, and nationally supported. Students deeply learn democratic principles and apply them through practice.
-
Civic participation strengthens democracy.
Civic education is only fully realized when it translates into sustained participation. Our work isn’t just about the classroom — it’s about strong civic life and connected communities.
Fiercely non-partisan education that is rooted in the Constitution — not in politics
Based on 35 years of research with decades of evidence-guided refinement
Inquiry-based by design, engaging students through interaction and participation
Delivered through a robust national network, reaching every state, D.C. — and far beyond
An unmatched record of innovation and impact
