Robert Morris was born in England in 1734.
He came to America when he was 13.
Morris was educated in Philadelphia and worked there in a shipping-banking firm.
As a member of the Continental Congress, he voted against independence, but still worked hard on behalf of the new nation.
He served as superintendent of finance under the Articles of Confederation, a very difficult job.
At the Philadelphia Convention, Morris said little, although he was known to sympathize with those wanting a stronger central government.
