Jonathan Dayton was a native of New Jersey and a delegate from that state to the Philadelphia Convention.
Born in 1760, Dayton was the youngest man to sign the Constitution.
Dayton entered the Continental Army shortly after graduating from the College of New Jersey.
After the war, Dayton studied law and set up his practice.
He also served in the New Jersey legislature.
Dayton was chosen to attend the Philadelphia Convention because his father and another associate decided not to go.
He participated in the debates and signed the Constitution, even though there were some parts of it he did not like.
Dayton later served in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The city of Dayton, Ohio, is named after him because he owned the land where the city was founded.
