Jared Ingersoll was born in Connecticut, the son of a British colonial official.
Ingersoll graduated from Yale and then managed his father’s business affairs.
He followed his father to Philadelphia, where he studied law.
Ingersoll attended every session of the Philadelphia Convention, although he said little.
His service after the convention was extensive, holding such jobs as attorney general of Pennsylvania and presiding judge of the Philadelphia District Court.
He once ran for vice president, but lost.
In his successful law practice, he argued several important cases before the Supreme Court.
