The son of a blacksmith and farmer, Broom was born in Delaware in 1752.
During the Revolution he prepared maps for George Washington for the Battle of Brandywine, which was an American defeat.
His career was varied, and included farming, surveying and mapmaking, shipping, importing, real estate, and city government.
Broom attended every session of the Philadelphia Convention, speaking on several occasions.
After the Convention, he served as the first postmaster of Wilmington and as chairman of the board of directors of the Delaware Bank.
Broom was a relentless entrepreneur and died in Philadelphia while attending to business.
