Lesson 1: What Do You Know about Democracy?

Lesson Purpose

This lesson will help you learn about the county where you live. It will also help you learn about the state where you live. You will learn that your country is a democracy. You will learn that your country has a government. You will learn more about these words in later lessons.

You will be asked what you know about democracy. If you do not know anything about democracy, do not worry. If you do know something about democracy, share it with your class. All the lessons in this book will help you learn more about democracy. In fact, you will probably learn more about democracy all your life.

Lesson Objectives

When you have completed this lesson, you should be able to

  • name the state and country where you live,
  • point to your state and country on a map,
  • point to other countries next to your country and name them, and
  • share anything you might know about democracy.

Lesson Terms

country
Usually an area of land where all the people have the same government. Sometimes there might be separate areas of land that all belong to one country. For example, Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico are all separate from the main part of the United States. But they all a part of the same country.
