Literacy for We the People accelerates literacy through civic education. Led by the Delaware Department of Education through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Education Innovation and Research Program, Literacy for We the People infuses systemic literacy instruction while engaging upper elementary and middle school students in the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution curricular program. The project integrates the science of reading with the most rigorously researched civic education curricular program in the nation.

Educators will participate in sustained, interactive professional learning led by experienced mentor teachers. They will provide students with explicit and intentional instruction in reading, writing, and communication as they engage with knowledge-rich content and authentic assessment on the founding history and principles of the U.S. Constitution.

The project begins in Delaware in 2026 and will expand to additional states in 2027. The Center for Civic Education is proud to partner with the Delaware Department of Education, the University of Delaware, and the Civic Education Research Lab at Georgetown University.

About

CCE LogoThe Center for Civic Education is a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating an informed and thoughtful citizenry committed to democratic principles and actively engaged in the practice of democracy. We do this primarily through our flagship programs, We the People and Project Citizen, but we also provide high-quality, inquiry-driven curricular programs that bring civic learning to life. The Center additionally equips educators with professional learning that builds confidence and capacity to teach civics with depth and relevance, unlocks students’ civic agency by creating opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, and share their voices through simulated hearings and other public forums. These initiatives build a national community committed to strengthening civic understanding and participation for all and root everything in decades of research and evidence. Learn more.
