Exercises in Participation is a series of interdisciplinary curricular programs designed for upper elementary and middle grade students. In each program, students examine an important current problem in a hypothetical middle school. They work cooperatively to develop a plan to deal with the problem and culminate their study by presenting a plan of action to an audience composed of students and adults. Each program takes approximately 9-12 class periods. Each set of classroom materials contains 30 illustrated student books and a teacher's guide.

"I found the [Violence in the Schools] curriculum to be particularly stimulating for a number of reasons. One is its emphasis on citizens' groups as civic conflict managers. Another is its strong challenge to students to engage in the process of evaluating public policy.... Students who take full advantage of the curriculum will probably end up being more well-informed about violence prevention and conflict resolution than most adults."

    Alan Markwood, reviewer
The Fourth R: The Newsletter of the National Association for Mediation in Education

Drugs in the Schools: Preventing Substance Abuse

Students examine the problem of drug and alcohol abuse in a hypothetical middle school, in their community, and in the nation. They work together to develop a prevention plan. This program can be used to fulfill state drug education program requirements and those of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act.

"Drugs in the Schools is an excellent curriculum that takes an innovative approach with students in the high-risk middle school years. I found the activities and lessons to be extremely relevant and appropriate in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills."

    Darryl Cropton, Director
Drug Prevention Center, Florida Department of Education
