Description:
World Congress on Civic Education in Buenos Aires
Each year the Center hosts a World Congress on Civic Education in a country that has shown marked progress in education for democratic citizenship. This year the World Congress on Civic Education will take placein Buenos Aires, Argentina. Previous Congresses have been held in Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Northern Ireland, Russia, Mexico, Hungary, Jordan, and Poland.
From May 17th–May 21st participants from over 57 countries and 23 US states will gather in Buenos Aires to exchange and share ideas and best practices in education for democracy. The annual Congress includes interactive participation in thematic workshops designed to strengthen civic education and civic culture. The World Congress in Buenos Aires will be co-hosted by the Center and Asociación Conciencia–one of Argentina’s foremost NGOs promoting human rights and conscientious citizenship.
The theme for this year’s Congress will be Civic Conscience and Citizen Engagement, or, in Spanish, Conciencia Ciudadana y Acción. Presenters and participants will challenge each other to think critically about the link between individual conscience and civic engagement, explore the contributions made by civic education to moving individuals from being “subjects” to citizens in charge of their civic destiny, and identify ways in which civic education can translate personal values into the public practice of civic virtue. Highlights of the agenda will include presentations on the civic education programs, projects, and activities administered in Argentina by Asociación Conciencia.
