State Superintendent of Schools Receives Prestigious Award for Commitment to Civic Education

The 2008 Civitas International Leader Award was presented to the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick at a reception on Capitol Hill in September 2008.

The award recognized Grasmick’s long commitment to expanding civic education in the United States and throughout the world.

The presentation, which was held in the Russell Senate Caucus Room, took place during the Civitas International Programs’ “Building and Sustaining Strong International Partnerships” conference in Washington, D.C. The conference brought together 35 civic educators who serve as U.S. leaders in educational programs abroad.

“Our civic education programs are critical if we want to teach and encourage our young people to exercise their rights and responsibilities as citizens and deepen their connection to civil society,” said Grasmick.

The ceremony was attended by congressional education and international affairs aides from several states and two members of the Maryland House delegation, John Sarbanes and Chris Van Hollen.

Grasmick recently participated in an exchange visit to Almaty, Kazakhstan, as part of “Civic Leaders Advancing Active and Responsible Citizenship: An Exchange Program for Kazakhstan, India, and the United States.”

The Maryland State Department of Education has partnered with the Civitas International Programs since 2002.
