SVPDP Wins Compass Award

The Pennsylvania Coalition for Representative Democracy has honored the School Violence Prevention Demonstration Program in Allentown, Pennsylvania, with its Compass Award for Excellence in Civic Learning.

The Coalition gives the award to an individual, school, or organization that has “excelled and promoted civic engagement at the community level and has served as a civic leader and role model.”

First lady Marjorie O. Rendell presented the award to SVPDP Director Maria Gallo and site coordinators Myron Yoder and Melissa Bell at a ceremony in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Past Compass Award recipients include Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and David Trevaskis, the pro bono coordinator for the Pennsylvania State Bar Association.

The SVPDP, which forms the elementary civics component for social studies in grades K-5 in Allentown, was studied by more than 9,000 students in more than 400 classrooms in 18 schools.
