Foundation Advances Democracy Education in Taiwan

The Civic and Law-Related Education (CLRE) Foundation in Taiwan is a nonprofit organization that began its programming in 2003 and has experienced significant success over the past decade. Spurred by the interest of Taiwanese attorneys to help the country invest in high quality civic education for democracy and with the support of Taiwan’s Rotary Clubs, the Foundation has developed and disseminated curricula marked by “active learning” and high levels of civic engagement. These curricula include adaptations of the Foundations of Democracy and Project Citizen materials of the California-based Center for Civic Education. The CLRE Foundation has also sponsored numerous teacher training workshops in order to help teachers implement the curricula. In just ten years the Foundation’s programs have expanded to schools and libraries throughout Taiwan with many noteworthy accomplishments. Read the rest of this entry »

Civitas Armenia Awarded UNDEF Grant

Armenian Center for Democratic Education-CIVITAS, the Center for Civic Education’s Civitas International Programs partner in Armenia, will implement “Democracy and Human Rights Education in Armenia” with a grant from the United Nations Democracy Fund. Preschoolers in Caracas, Venezuela are learning about Foundations of Democracy in an innovative program conducted by Civitas Venezuela.

Civitas Venezuela, the Center for Civic Education’s Civitas International Programs partner, is implementing “Learning to Coexist with Values,” a civic education program for preschoolers ages three to six. Preschoolers, teachers, and parents in Petare and Chacao, municipalities in the Caracas metropolitan area, are taking part in the program.
