In Memoriam: Margaret Stimmann Branson

Long-serving Center for Civic Education associate director Dr. Margaret Branson passed away on Wednesday, May 15. Dr. Branson made remarkable contributions to civic education in the United States and throughout the world.

She was the author of numerous textbooks and professional articles. Dr. Branson was a principal researcher and author of We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution, the National Standards for Civics and Government, and many other works. Prior to joining the Center, she was assistant superintendent for instructional services of the Kern County Schools in California and served on the Center’s Board of Directors. Dr. Branson was also an associate professor of education at Holy Names University and director of secondary education at Mills College in Oakland, California. A memorial for Dr. Branson will be held on June 29 at 11:00 am at St. Luke’s church in Reno, Nevada.
