The Foundations of Democracy Mosaic was launched during School Violence Prevention Week, March 22-26, 2010 by the School Violence Prevention Demonstration Program. Classrooms across the country submitted posters to create this collaborative vision of how democracy and violence prevention work in concert.

Submissions came from far and wide:

  • Third graders in rural Ripon, Wisconsin depicted the everlasting pain that words can have on an individual.
  • Sophomores in inner-city Baltimore, Maryland reflected on the violent effects that injustice has had in their neighborhoods.
  • Middle School students in Cleveland City, Tennessee worked in groups using photos to depict the concepts of Authority, Privacy, Responsibility, and Justice.
  • Third graders in Allentown, Pennsylvania acted out scenarios involving the four concepts and created posters using photos of their skits.
The Foundations of Democracy Mosaic continues to grow. Add your students' insights, experiences, and ideas surrounding Authority, Privacy, Responsibility, and Justice and violence prevention by creating a poster using the guidelines below.
