Martin was born in New Jersey around 1740.

He moved to North Carolina after graduating from the College of New Jersey.

He served in various local and state offices and served in the army as a colonel.

Martin was tried and acquitted of the charge of cowardice after the Battle of Germantown, but resigned his commission in 1777.

Martin returned to North Carolina and resumed his successful political career, holding various state offices.

He attended the Philadelphia Convention, but left early and did not sign the document.

After the convention, he served as governor, as a U.S. senator, and as a state senator.
